Kelly Clarkson is adding another breakup song to her list of iconic anthems “Miss Independent” and “Since U Been Gone.” On Tuesday, April 4, the first American Idol winner teased her new song on social media. It’s cutthroat and powerful, and shows off Clarkson’s incredible voice, just as we’ve come to expect from the 40-year-old.
“Someone’s gonna show you how a heart can be used like you did mine,” she sang in the black-and-white clip, which was recorded in a studio. The song, called “Mine,” will be available on April 14.
On March 26, Clarkson, who is a judge on The Voice in addition to her gigs as host of her own daytime talk show and recording artist, announced that new music is coming soon. “I’ve been working on this project for, well, close to three years now, and I wasn’t sure I was going to release it, but I am and the album is called Chemistry.”
Given the timeline, the song and album will likely address Clarkson’s divorce. She filed for divorce from music manager Brandon Blackstock in June 2020, and it was finalized in August 2021. They began dating in 2012 and got married in 2013. They have two children: a daughter, River Rose, and a son, Remy.
“I regret nothing,” Kelly Clarkson said in 2021, per People. “Even unfortunate things that happen in your life or hard things, ’cause we can do hard things. But also I feel like that’s what shapes you, it’s what makes you a better person, it’s what makes you recognize: Okay, I missed those red flags, I missed that, I ignored that on purpose.” Will Chemistry join the pantheon of divorce albums alongside Adele’s 30? Definitely. “Mine” is her “Easy on Me.”
